What to Know About the New NYC Trash Bin

Sizes, prices, and dates

It’s official – NYC now has an official NYC Bin

Instant recap:  Yesterday, NYC Mayor Eric Adams rolled out his own trash from Gracie Mansion in the new official NYC Bin. The move is part of the city’s “Trash Revolution'' to containerize all residential and commercial trash. The NYC Bin is for buildings with 1-9 units and can be purchased online from one designated vendor.

Important dates:

  • November 12, 2024 - residential trash can no longer be placed in bags on the curb. If it's not in the official NYC Bin, it can be put out in your existing cans with fastened lids.
  • June 2026 - use of official NYC Bin is required by all buildings with 1-9 units.

The official NYC Bin is the new weapon in the war on rats

Yesterday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the next stage of the "Trash Revolution" to combat the mountains of ugly black trash bags that have marred the look of NYC streets for decades.

At Gracie Mansion, Mayor Adams placed the trash in a spiffy new official NYC Bin, to demonstrate just how easy it is to wheel trash to the curb.

There’s a CITIBIN for NYC’s new wheelie bin

Knowing that homeowners would need a larger size for the official NYC Bins, CITIBIN created ourMedium-sized trash enclosures.TheMediumis already in stock and ready to install.

"We're proud to be part of the Trash Revolution in NYC and have adapted our product line to fit the new NYC wheelie bins," said CITIBIN Founder and CEOLiz Picarazzi. You may already be familiar with CITIBINs, which are located throughout New York City’s five boroughs, in Business Improvement Districts, NYC Parks, and Libraries. As for what the new requirements mean to New Yorkers, Picarazzi said “Think of CITIBIN as parking for your NYC Bins. There's even an option for built-in planters!"

CITIBIN can retrofit existing small-size trash enclosures to fit the official NYC Bins

If you already own a small-size CITIBIN (previously named the “Standard”), don’t panic. CITIBIN created a retrofit kit that increases the depth and height of the Small Enclosure to fit the new NYC wheelie bins. “As soon as the new NYC can dimensions were confirmed by DSNY, our engineers designed the retrofit kit, which is already manufactured and available for sale,” Picarazzi said. “We're so on top of it that our retrofit kit was available even before the Mayor took out his trash in the official NYC Bins.”

As a quick reminder, CITIBIN has multiple-size trash enclosures. The SMALL is for 32-44 gallon cans, the MEDIUM is for 45-55 gallon cans, and the LARGE is for 65-96 gallon cans. We also have optional add-ons, including custom planters, a mailbox option, and a parcel locker, the ParcelBin
