CITIBIN BasketPlus for Cities and Parks

Part public litter basket, part storage for full bags, CITIBIN’s BasketPlus is an innovative way to manage public trash

5-second recap: Baltimore and Chicago have been rolling out a new approach to municipal trash – the BasketPlus(™).   Part public litter basket, part storage, BasketPlus enclosures handle the full trash bags that often end up on the ground next to the basket. It’s an innovation that municipal clients have embraced because there’s nothing like it in the market. More cities are on the way.

Trash containerization is public beautification

Trash on “Main Street” – in the commercial corridors of major cities – hurts commerce and tourism.  Who wants to go shopping in an area with trash bags stacked on the sidewalk? After working to containerize municipal trash in NYC Business Improvement Districts, parks, and universities nationwide, CITIBIN saw an opportunity to combine two needs into one product.

Enter BasketPlus: an enclosure that collects and stores trash at the same time.

The typical litter basket is just that; a basket alone, with no storage capability. Our BasketPlus addresses this situation; when litter baskets aren’t big enough, bagged trash ends up sitting next to the can. That's what BasketPlus is for.  It's a corner basket plus a "sidecar" enclosure to store full bags. And it’s modular, so you can separate waste streams and add as many storage bins as needed. It's a brilliant way to upgrade public litter baskets and beautify your corridor in the process. and avoid the placement of trash bags on the sidewalk.

Baltimore piloted BasketPlus before rolling it out to the Downtown district

Last year, the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore placed custom vinyl-wrapped CITIBIN BasketPlus enclosures in multiple locations. The Baltimore work started in 2024 with a pilot location on Pratt Street, in the city’s famous Inner Harbor district. The trial installation was a chance to observe our new innovation in real life, with real users interacting with it. To have a month of user data is product development gold – it helps us iterate quickly. Baltimore actually had a survey for the public to provide input on the CITIBIN pilot.

The pilot was successful, so the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore decided to roll out 100 BasketPlus(™)  locations in 2024 and will be doing 100 more in 2025.  Our COO Frank Picarazzi said that “the before and after photos are dramatic – from dilapidated to beautiful.”

If you’re in the market for public litter baskets, consider this

If your city needs to replace aging litter baskets, consider the BasketPlus. Part collection basket, part holding pen for trash bags, it keeps trash off the sidewalk, eliminating the eyesore and feast for rodents.  And the size of a typical BasketPlus issurprisingly manageable; a 2-bin unit is 4.5’ L x 2.5’ W, around the same footprint as a basket with a few trash bags laying next to it!

If you manage a public area of a city, we’d love to create a rendering of your trash before and after containerization. For a consultation, please call us at 347.549.4121 or email us atinfo@citibin.com.
