Online shopping is great. That is, of course, until your package is stolen from your porch before you have a chance to enjoy it. Or perhaps your package was left out in the rain and damaged. Whether it is Mother Nature or criminal activity that you are trying to guard against, it’s smart to have a plan in place to protect delivered packages. Here are some options to keep your packages safe.

Deliver to a Locker

Many delivery companies like Amazon offer a service where you can have your packages delivered to a locker in your city or nearby town. The packages will be secure in those locations, and you can pick them up at your convenience. For those concerned about package theft who don’t have any other safeguards in place, this might be a smart way to go.

Unfortunately, there is an obvious drawback to this plan. The packages won’t be delivered to your home. Part of the appeal of online shopping is the fact that you don’t have to go track down the items that you want to purchase. So, while having your orders delivered to a locker can work for some people—especially those who will be near a locker location anyway—it’s not the right choice for everyone.

Use a Security Camera

Thieves driving around trying to steal packages don’t want to be seen or recorded. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to consider covering your front porch with a security camera. This can allow you to keep tabs on what’s going on, and it can serve as a deterrent to potential thieves.

The idea is that presence of the camera will deter a criminal from running up and grabbing the boxes. But unfortunately, this doesn’t actually prevent the crime. Bold thieves may still choose to steal your package or simply cover their face when approaching. It’s also important to note that there’s often not much police can do even with clear camera footage.

Schedule Deliveries Carefully

With most online orders, you will receive tracking information for your shipment. This allows you to see the path that your order takes as it makes its way to you. It’s a good idea to keep track along the way so you know when to expect the package. Even if the tracking information only provides you with a date, you may already know what time the delivery person tends to make their way into your neighborhood.

It’s good to know when to expect your packages, because this will allow you to bring them in quickly after they have arrived. For instance, if your package is delivered in the morning, you might be able to stop by on your lunch break to pick it up. Or, you may be able to ask your neighbor to hold it for you, if you’ll be out a while. Of course, this option will require you to be alert and ready to bring your package inside once its delivered. That’s simply not possible with many people’s busy schedules.

Use A Package Lockbox

One of the best options on the market to protect delivered packages is a package lockbox. A sturdy lockbox will provide delivery drivers a secure place to leave your orders. Simply secure the box with a combination lock, make sure the driver is given the combination as part of your order, and rest easy knowing you’ve taken a big step against theft.

In addition to protecting your packages from theft, these boxes can also help to keep your packages protected from nasty weather. You don’t want rain pounding down on your deliveries, of course. Having your packages contained in a delivery box can help to keep them in excellent condition, even in inclement weather.
